1. Course Overview & Exam Details

Purpose

The GMAT Focus Edition, launched in early 2024, is a streamlined, efficient version of the GMAT exam.
It consists of three sections—Quantitative Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning, and Data Insights each lasting 45 minutes, totaling 2 hours and 15 minutes, plus an optional 10-minute break.

Format

  • Quantitative Reasoning: ~21 algebra & arithmetic questions (geometry removed)
  • Verbal Reasoning: ~23 questions (reading comprehension + critical reasoning)
  • Data Insights: ~20 questions involving table analysis, graphics interpretation, data sufficiency, multi-source reasoning, etc.

Scoring:

Section scores range from 60–90; the total score ranges from 205–805, in 10-point increments.  

Validity & Retakes

Valid for 5 years; you can retake it once every 16 days, up to five times per rolling year and eight times total.

2. Exam Fee in India & Registration Process

Fees (all inclusive of GST):

  • Test center: USD 275 (~INR 23,200–23,600)
  • Online (at home): USD 300 (~INR 25,400–25,600)

Additional Fees:

  • Rescheduling: USD 55–165 (Test Centre), USD 60–180 (Online), depending on timing.
  • Cancellation refunds: USD 110–55 (Test Centre), USD 120–60 (Online), based on notice given.
  • Additional score report: USD 35 (~INR 2,900).

Registration Steps:

  • Visit mba.com, create an account.
  • Fill in the required details, choose your test mode (test center or online), date, and pay the fee.
  • Slots are bookable up to 24 hours before the test, but it's advisable to schedule several months early.
  • Receive confirmation via email and manage your appointment via your account.

3. Prep Plan & Study Strategies

Start with the basics

  • Use the GMAT Official Starter Kit to understand the exam structure and question types

Assess your baseline:

  • Take the free Official Practice Exam 1 to gauge where you stand.

Build a structured schedule:

  • A 10-week plan is effective—spend ~12 hours weekly (2–3 weekdays, extended weekend sessions).

Sample breakdown:

  • Weeks 1–2: Arithmetic, algebra, reading, critical reasoning
  • Later weeks: Word problems, data sufficiency, Data Insights, timed practice, revisions, full mocks.

Topic mastery:

  • Focus deeply on one topic at a time, practice until achieving consistent accuracy (e.g., 90%+), then move to timed practice.

Final week

  • Emphasize light review, pacing drills, and mental and physical well-being. Avoid cramming new material.

4. Test-Day Advice

Official guidance includes:

  • Get a good night’s sleep
  • Watch pacing and use the on-screen timer.
  • Read each question carefully.
  • If a question seems too time-consuming, eliminate wrong options and move on.
For center-based test-takers:
  • Confirm test time and location; arrive 30 minutes early.
  • Bring a valid ID matching registration
  • oKnow what’s allowed and prohibited in the test center.

From test-taker experiences:

“Don’t spend more than 3 mins on a problem… Carry an energy bar/banana… Do not forget your passport… Get a full night’s rest”.
“The day before: warm up with a few practice questions, get into GMAT mode but stay relaxed… On test day, keep your routine normal.”
Additional suggestions:
  • Warm up with 3–5 quick questions (Quant, CR, Data Insights) on test morning.
  • Apply elimination strategies (“fall in love with options”) rather than seeking a perfect answer.
  • If anxious, rely on your intuition and prepped instinct.
